GAAMAC is an inclusive network created in 2013 by States, civil society organizations and academic institutions with the support of the United Nations. It works collaboratively to provide a platform for the prevention of atrocities (genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing). GAAMAC assists interested States in operationalizing the prevention of atrocities at the national level through information-sharing, enhancing links among and between States, civil society and academia, and peer-to-peer support. GAAMAC holds open global meetings every two years. The global GAAMAC meetings convene practitioners in atrocity prevention from around the world. The first such meeting, GAAMAC I, was held in Costa Rica in 2014. GAAMAC II took place in the Philippines in 2016. GAAMAC III took place in Kampala, Uganda, from 23 to 25 May 2018.
GAAMAC is led by a Steering Group that functions through regular virtual meetings and working groups. GAAMAC partners are different civil society organizations active in atrocity prevention. The GAAMAC Support Office was established in October 2017 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. It offers practical support to the GAAMAC Chair, the Steering Group and GAAMAC partners.
